Scotiabank or The Bank of Nova Scotia which was founded in Halifax, Nova Scotia in the year 1832 is a multinational bank of Canada. It ranks third in Canada in terms of deposits and market capitalization. Offering a range of products and services that includes personal banking, commercial banking, corporate and investment banking, it serves more than 25 million customers throughout the world. It is also a member of the London Bullion Market Association through its subsidiary ScotiaMocatta.
The bank was to facilitate the trans-Atlantic trade back then. In the year 1883, the bank acquired the Union Bank of Prince Edward Island and expanded in the form of branch openings. It was in Windsor, Nova Scotia that the bank launched its branch banking system. The expansion took place only in Maritimes until the bank opened one of its branches in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1882.
However, the Manitoba branch couldn’t survive and closed, but it continued the expansion in the American Midwest. A branch in Minneapolis also opened in 1885 which was later transferred to Chicago in 1892. On 10th December 1894, Commercial Bank of Newfoundland and Union Bank of Newfoundland collapsed, and on 15th December 1894, The Bank of Nova Scotia established in Newfoundland. One more branch opened in Boston, Massachusetts in 1899.
Also, a branch opened in Kingston, Jamaica in the year 1889 which was to facilitate sugar, fish, and rum. It was marked as the first move of the bank in the Caribbean, and it also marked as being the first Canadian bank to open one of its branches outside the USA and UK. It was in the year 1900 that the headquarters of the Bank shifted to Toronto, Ontario.
There were some controversies as well as related to the bank. In June 2005, David Berry, a successful Canadian Scotiabank trader who traded in preferred shares was fired because he violated securities regulation. Lately, he filed a wrongful dismissal lawsuit for $100M against the bank.
The bank was awarded as “Best Emerging Market Bank in Latin America” by Global Finance Magazine.
